Birds on a Wire progress

The kinetic artwork Birds on a Wire will be installed November 6th in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle. (that is, I will be installing it. It is not going to get installed by itself!). The site is a 20 foot long, shallow storefront vitrine. The sheer size has compelled me to redevelop the idea somewhat.
sketch of proposal
From the original proposal sketch, on the left, a lot of experimentation was needed to get from this sketch to a functioning kinetic piece. I tried clock mechanisms and homemade gears before settling on a pinion pulley and belt system:

In the end, the idea continues to evolve in response to materials, circumstances, time and place - which is why I am interested in site-specific work.
The wires have evolved into a large latticework spanning the 20-foot width of the display space.
Testing the scale of the lattice on the lawn!
Testing a small-scale model of the lattice.
Mockup of one bay before painting. I found some soy-based paint that is nontoxic but paints like an oil enamel.
Birds gessoed. I decided to use a jigsaw rather than a laser cutter because it allowed me to draw directly on the MDF panels and I love to draw.
Fasteners are handmade from nylon threaded rod. I am going to try dyeing them next.
