pathways program life skills facility
Mercer Island, WA Mercer Island School District’s Pathways program provides adult students with disabilities aged 18-21 with vocational training and life skills to assist in the transition to independent adult living. For this innovative program, AGD adapted a SAGE modular classroom, integrating spaces for independent living, post-secondary education, and employment preparation – including a kitchen, laundry, living room, an office area, and classrooms. The design of the facility goes beyond code-mandated ADA accessibility requirements, considering sightlines for students in wheelchairs; adaptive cabinet inserts to allow access to storage on high shelves; large restroom facilities with generous sink and counter spaces to allow a student and a caring adult to practice life skills side by side. This facility exemplifies dedication to creating inclusive environments that promote personal growth and independence for all learners. - School district opens new Pathways building for Adult Transition Program - Beyond the Ramp for a Sense of Belonging – One School District’s Story in Creating an Accessible Space for Students with Disabilities |
