national children's center
Kisarawe District, Tanzania [with Architects Without Borders] fundraising underway This is a multi-phase project to create a center for people with albinism that is self-sustaining, safe, and therapeutic. The first phase of the project, and orphanage for young children, is designed as a series of single-story, house-like buildings arranged around a central courtyard with plenty of shaded outdoor play area. The buildings can be constructed over time as funds allow. North-south orientation and large overhanging roofs minimize glare and solar radiation. Load-bearing exterior walls will be constructed of interlocking soil-stabilized blocks (ISSB), with a separate structural system to support the span of the roof. |
