Before I start your project, I'd like to know more about you.
What are your values?
How do you use your current space, if you have one? When can I come visit?
Where do you find beauty?
Are there aspects of the design and construction process that you'd like explained?
For those new to building, or working with an architect: the design process is broadly divided up into phases, each of which has a role for you to play.

For those new to building, or working with an architect: the design process is broadly divided up into phases, each of which has a role for you to play.
Schematic design: set goals, explore options, and agree on a single three-dimensional design idea, budget and scope.
Technical and sustainability strategies should be considered. Design development: dive into technical research and coordination, refine and adjust the design with input from users. Construction documentation: iron out all the kinks and details; create the set of legal documents that are used to define the contractor's scope of work. Construction administration: periodically review the work under construction to make sure it is consistent with the contract, assist contractor and owner with technical issues. Closeout: ensure that work is fully complete and owner is provided with training and manuals as needed. Post-occupancy: check in to see how things are working. |
Your role: share your ideas, needs and goals, be receptive to design ideas. The process along the way can be very fluid and fun, as long as key decisions are made by the end of the phase.
Your role: share any detailed design requirements you may have, ask questions if you're not clear on anything. Your role: start preparing for construction. Your role: be available to authorize decisions, meet onsite periodically with architect and contractor to review progress. Your role: make sure you have everything you need to fully utilize your new space. Your role: let the architect and the contractor know if things aren't working so that they can be taken care of within the contractor's warranty period. It can take time for a new building to settle in. |
